Reflecting on Dever’s Digitizing Day: A Legacy Etched in Iron



The intersection of Mt. Vernon Street and it felt a little heavier—and a lot more meaningful—on March 26th. As the community gathered for Dever’s Digitizing Day, the atmosphere wasn't just about a school closing; it was about ensuring that decades of history didn’t simply vanish when the doors locked for the last time.

The highlight of the event was the unveiling of the new street sign, a permanent marker for the Paul A. Dever Elementary School. For those who have walked those halls, the sign is more than a navigational tool; it is a testament to the generations of families who were shaped by the "bricks and mortar" on Columbia Point.

A Voice from the Community

During the ceremony, the personal weight of this milestone was captured in the dedication speech:

"It’s an honor to be here for Dever’s Digitizing Day and the unveiling of the street sign. They say all roads lead through the Dever, and for my family, that’s certainly been true. I attended here many years ago, and more recently, I've had the joy of watching my son walk these same halls.

Today, we are celebrating a legacy of community and family. This street sign is more than just a landmark; it’s a permanent tribute to the history we are preserving and the future we’re building together."

The Faces Behind the Memories

The night was filled with more than just speeches and signs—it was a homecoming. One of the most moving parts of the evening was the chance to reconnect with the educators who have been the backbone of the Dever for decades.

It was a special moment to see the teachers who had the honor of teaching my son, but the biggest surprises were still to come. I was absolutely floored to see Ms. D, my own 3rd-grade teacher, and Ms. Harden, my music teacher. Having them there felt like the circle was finally complete. It’s one thing to talk about a school's "legacy," but it’s another thing entirely to hug the people who actually built it.

Seven Decades of Strength

The Dever educated countless generations for nearly 70 years. That speaks volumes. This school was never just a building; it was always about community and family. For seven decades, these walls held our stories, our growth, and our shared history.

Seeing the community come together—alumni, current parents, and local leaders—reminded everyone that while buildings might change their purpose, the legacy of the people inside them is much harder to erase. The sign on Mt. Vernon Street stands as a promise that the Paul A. Dever Elementary School will not be forgotten.

No matter where we go from here, we are forever family. We carry that spirit with us, always.

More Than Just a Ceremony

The "Digitizing Day" initiative served a dual purpose. While the street sign provides a physical landmark for the future, the digitizing efforts ensure that the stories, photos, and achievements of the students and faculty are preserved in the digital record.

  • Securing the Future: Creating a permanent touchstone for alumni to visit.
