Recovery, Resilience, and the Power of Community

Recovery, Resilience, and the Power of Community

I wanted to share an update on how things have been going since my surgery just under a week ago. For the first few days, I felt like I was on the right track, but things took a turn Friday evening. I ended up in the ER with a suspected blood clot.

A Health Update

I am so thankful that the clot they found was small. Interestingly, the ER focused on a chest CT rather than imaging my leg. While that ruled out a major Pulmonary Embolism (PE), the scan did show something unexpected with my 5th and 6th ribs—likely an echo from a past issue that I’ll need to keep an eye on.

My blood levels were also quite a bit "off," showing that both my HE and Hemolytic Anemia are active right now. My next step is getting back in with the blood specialist to get those levels stabilized.

As for the surgical site, I had my one-week post-op checkup. Most of the incisions are healing well, though two spots are being a bit stubborn—one is still bleeding and another is draining clear-yellow fluid. Despite the stinging, chills, and mild pain, the medical team didn't classify it as an infection yet, so we are in a "wait and see" mode. I head back in this Wednesday for a deep vein ultrasound to check the rest of my legs.

Finding the Silver Linings

Despite the hospital trip, there were some bright spots this weekend. I had friends over for dinner, and it was exactly the kind of "soul medicine" I needed. There is something about good company that makes the recovery process feel a little less lonely.

Advocacy Doesn't Rest: Save Our Schools!

Even while taking it slow, my mind is still on the work ahead. I’ve been using this quiet time to draft documents for the upcoming BPS Budget meetings.

We have to tell BPS that our children need our educators. We cannot stand by while schools are closed and our community is disrupted. Please, if you haven't already, sign and share our petition to tell the district to stop these closures and support our teachers:

I’m also thrilled to share two big updates for the Dever community:

  • The Street Sign: It is officially installed! I haven’t been able to see it in person yet, but knowing it’s there to honor the school’s legacy means the world.

  • Digitizing Day: Don't forget that this Thursday is Digitizing Day at the Dever. It’s a vital chance to preserve our history before the school year wraps up. I can’t believe how fast this year is flying by!

Thank you all for the check-ins and the support. I’m taking it one day at a time. Stay tuned for more updates!
