The Bridge to Success: Why the Dever-Batson Campus is the Key to BPS’s Future

In the world of Boston Public Schools, we hear a lot about "High-Quality Student Experiences" and "modernizing our footprint." But right now, at the corner of Mt. Vernon and Shoreham, we are about to witness a move that defies both logic and community common sense.

BPS is preparing to shutter the Dever Elementary School. Meanwhile, the Ruth Batson Academy—our 7-12 powerhouse—is entering a multi-year, multi-million dollar renovation project.

Look at these two buildings. They aren't just neighbors; they are physically connected by an enclosed bridge. They are a ready-made campus. Yet, the current plan is to close one and "study" the other.

The Vision: One Campus, Two Houses

Why are we looking for "swing space" and temporary trailers when the solution is literally behind a connecting door?

The logical, "showstopper" move is simple: Create the Ruth Batson Unified Campus.

  • The Lower House (The Dever Building): A dedicated, age-appropriate space for 7th and 8th graders. Let our middle schoolers have their own identity, their own hallways, and their own "home base" while they transition into the rigors of high school.

  • The Upper House (The Batson Building): Keep the larger campus dedicated to the 9-12 grades, allowing for expanded vocational programs, advanced labs, and the high-school experience our students deserve.

  • The Bridge: It’s more than just glass and steel. It’s the literal link that allows shared access to the gym, the cafeteria, and the auditorium without students ever having to step outside into the elements or onto a bus.

The Reality Check: Stop the "Money Pit" Excuse

The city will tell you the Dever building is "old." But you know what’s more expensive than repairing a roof? Busing students across the city because we gave up on a building that was already in our hands. You know what’s more expensive than an HVAC upgrade? Losing the trust of parents who are tired of seeing their communities dismantled piece by piece.

A Call to the City Council

We aren't just asking to "save a school." We are asking BPS to be strategic.

  • Keep the seats.

  • Keep the campus together.

  • Keep the students first.

If we are truly building a "Green New Deal" for our schools, let’s start by not wasting the infrastructure we already have. Let’s turn the Dever into the "Lower House" of the Batson and show the rest of the city what a true, unified 7-12 campus looks like.

The bridge is already there. BPS just needs the courage to cross it.
