Back to School Blues (and Joys!): Navigating the Unexpected
Wow! A lot has happened in the past seven months, and now, it's a new school year! My baby... I mean, my big boy is officially off to the 3rd grade today. It's his first day, and he's one happy dude!
A Rough Start: Bus Trouble and Speaking Out
Yesterday, however, wasn't so lucky. He was pumped and ready for class, waiting at the bus stop like he normally would, until I got a text message: "Your child's bus is unassigned a driver!" Seriously? Are we starting the year like this?
I had to break the news to him, and he was understandably unhappy. To see my little boy go from excited to crushed in a matter of seconds truly broke my heart. I let his teachers know, and they echoed, "This isn't our fault, it's the other hands at fault." So, I started calling Transportation, with no luck for the first two hours. Finally, around 9:30 AM, I got through to someone who, frankly, put her foot in her mouth. She told me, "Well, his bus was unassigned a driver but was covered by another bus and was 3 hours late, skipped your stop, and went to the school." Seriously?! I had already called his school, and they confirmed no covering bus ever arrived for the original route.
I continued digging and saw a post on social media about the issue. I responded that my son's bus never showed up, and that led to me being contacted for an interview for a news story! You can see the story here:
Standing Up for Our Kids: Addressing the Criticism
Since the story aired, I've received some negative responses. To those who think I intended to steal anyone's spotlight or wanted "10 seconds of fame," you are dead wrong. Someone needed to put BPS Transportation on notice that this isn't okay. These children, my son included, deserve to be on a bus and in school learning and being with their classmates, not being left wondering. So, I'm sorry, but not sorry, if you feel that way.
And for those who have kindly reached out to offer rides for my son to get to school, thank you! Your support means the world.
Looking Ahead: The Delta Variant and the Unknowns
There are still so many unknowns with this Delta variant. How long will schools remain open? When will children aged 11 and younger be vaccinated? We are all in this boat together, navigating these uncertain waters day by day.
